How to Sync Shopify to Looker Studio

Looker Studio is a great free way to share sales dashboards with your team, clients or investors. The hard part is getting Shopify data into it and keeping that data fresh.

How to Sync Shopify to Looker Studio

Build Shopify dashboards in Looker Studio that update on their own. Learn how to keep your Shopify orders, products and analytics flowing into Google Sheets or BigQuery with SyncRange, then report on them in Looker Studio.

Looker Studio is a great free way to share sales dashboards with your team, clients or investors. The hard part is getting Shopify data into it and keeping that data fresh. Without an automated feed, someone has to export CSVs, paste them into a spreadsheet and hope nothing breaks before the next meeting.

How to Sync Shopify Data to Looker Studio

Looker Studio reads Google Sheets and BigQuery natively, so you don't need to install anything extra to use either one as a data source. That makes them the most reliable way to get Shopify data into your reports. SyncRange connects to your Shopify store and exports the data you choose to a Google Sheet or a BigQuery dataset on a schedule. Looker Studio then reads from that destination, so your dashboards show the latest data each time SyncRange runs.

Which destination should you pick?

  • Google Sheets: Best for smaller stores and ad-hoc reporting. It's easy to share, and you can add formulas or notes before you build your charts. Keep in mind that Google Sheets has a 10 million cell limit.
  • BigQuery: Best for larger stores, long order histories and multi-store reporting. It scales to millions of rows, supports SQL joins, and Looker Studio queries it when the report is viewed.

If you're not sure, start with Google Sheets and move to BigQuery as your store grows. You can read more about both options in Viewing Your Data in Looker Studio.

Use Cases and Benefits

Syncing Shopify into Looker Studio gives you reporting that goes further than Shopify's built-in analytics:

  • Sales Dashboards Everyone Can Open: Share one live link with your team, clients or stakeholders instead of emailing spreadsheets around. Viewers don't need Shopify admin access to see revenue, order and product trends.
  • Product & Inventory Reporting: Use the Line Items and Products tabs to see top-selling products, vendors and product types, or track inventory quantity by variant and SKU.
  • Discounts, Refunds & Payments: Report on discount code usage, refunded amounts and buyer-facing payment methods (such as Visa, PayPal or Apple Pay) from Sales Metrics.
  • Traffic & Conversion: Shopify Analytics tabs such as Sessions, Campaigns and Search bring your store's traffic and conversion data into the same report as your sales.
  • Marketing Performance: Combine Shopify revenue with Meta Ads, Google Ads or TikTok Ads spend to track return on ad spend across channels in a single dashboard.

Manual Export of Shopify Data

Looker Studio doesn't come with a built-in Shopify connector from Google, so the manual route is to go through a spreadsheet. In your Shopify admin, go to Orders → Export, choose the orders and date range, and download the CSV. Then import the CSV into Google Sheets and add that sheet as a data source in Looker Studio. You can repeat this for products or customers.

This works for a one-off report, but it gets painful quickly. Every time you want fresh numbers you need to export and import again, and any change to the columns can break the charts that depend on them. Dashboards built this way are often out of date by the time someone looks at them.

Automating Shopify to Looker Studio with SyncRange

SyncRange replaces the CSV step with a scheduled export. The setup takes a few minutes and requires no coding.

  • Connect Shopify: Install SyncRange from the Shopify App Store, or from your SyncRange dashboard go to Apps → Shopify, enter your store URL (e.g. your-store.myshopify.com) and authorize the connection. SyncRange only requests read-only access, so it can't change your store, products or orders. See Connecting Your Shopify Store.
  • Connect Google and Add a Destination: Connect your Google account, then open the Google Integration dashboard. For Google Sheets, click Add Sheet and either create a new spreadsheet or pick an existing one with the Google Drive picker. For BigQuery, click Add BigQuery Destination, choose your Google Cloud project, and select an existing dataset or create a new one. You can also set an optional table prefix to keep your tables organised. See Configuring Google Sheets and Configuring Google BigQuery.
  • Create the Export: Open Export Builder and click Create New Export. Choose Shopify as the data source, select your store, and pick your Google Sheet or BigQuery dataset as the destination. Give it a clear name such as "Shopify to Looker Studio".
  • Choose Your Data Tabs and Columns: Each data type writes to its own sheet tab or BigQuery table. For most Looker Studio dashboards, start with Orders, Line Items (or Orders + Line Items) and Products. You can add Customers, Sales Metrics, Refund Analysis, Inventory, Collections, Discounts, Payouts and the Analytics tabs as your reporting grows. Pick only the columns you need. The Shopify data reference lists every field.
  • Set the Date Range and Filters: Choose a rolling date range such as Last 30 days, or use Since last export with Orders in Append mode to build up history over time. Optional order filters let you narrow Orders and Line Items by fulfilment status, payment status, order status, location, order tags or product tags. See Configuring Shopify Exports.
  • Save, Test and Schedule: Click Create Export and run it once to check the data in your sheet or BigQuery tables. Then set a schedule. The Free plan includes one export, synced daily Starter and Pro sync every hour, Scale every 30 minutes, and Growth every 15 minutes. See Setting Export Schedules.

Connecting Your Shopify Data to Looker Studio

Once your first export has finished, open Looker Studio, create a new report and click Add data:

  • Google Sheets: Choose the Google Sheets connector, then select your spreadsheet and the tab SyncRange writes to (for example, Orders).
  • BigQuery: Choose the BigQuery connector, then select your project, dataset and the table SyncRange populated (each export tab becomes its own table).

Add each tab you need as its own data source. You can rename fields, set data types and create calculated fields in the data source settings. For example, Average Order Value can be calculated as SUM(Total Price) / COUNT_DISTINCT(Order ID) on the Orders tab.

Here are some useful charts to start with:

  • Revenue Over Time: A time-series chart of Total Price by Order Date, with a date range control. Order Date is date-only, which makes it easy to group by day, week or month.
  • Key Metrics Scorecards: Total sales, order count, average order value, discounts and refunded amount.
  • Top Products: A table from Line Items showing Product Title, SKU, Quantity and Total Price, sorted by revenue.
  • Sales by Location: A geo map or bar chart using Shipping Country or Shipping Province/State.
  • Discount Performance: Orders and revenue grouped by Discount Codes Applied, or split into Manual Discount Codes and Automatic Discount Titles.
  • Order Status: Breakdowns by Fulfillment Status and Financial Status to keep an eye on unfulfilled or refunded orders.
  • Traffic and Conversion: Sessions and conversion trends from the Analytics Sessions tab, broken down by source, landing page, device or country.

If you add up money columns on the Orders + Line Items tab, use the line-level columns for line totals and the order-level columns for order totals, so revenue isn't double-counted.

Refresh Timing

Your dashboard is only as fresh as the data underneath it. SyncRange updates your sheet or tables on your export schedule. For Google Sheets, Looker Studio caches data, and you can change the cache expiry in the data source settings. For BigQuery, Looker Studio queries the tables when the report loads, so you'll see the latest data SyncRange has written.

Combining Shopify with Ad Data

To compare revenue against ad spend, export Shopify and your ad platforms (Meta Ads, Google Ads, TikTok Ads and others) to the same Google Sheet (different tabs) or the same BigQuery dataset. Then use Looker Studio's blend feature to join them on date. If you'd rather have SyncRange do the joining, Data Blends combines data from multiple connected platforms into unified cross-channel tabs in Google Sheets, BigQuery or Excel on a schedule.

Automating the Sync Provides Clear Benefits

  • Saves Time & Effort: No more downloading CSVs and re-importing them before every report. Once the export is set up, SyncRange does the recurring work.
  • Keeps Dashboards Up to Date: Scheduled exports mean your Looker Studio reports show current numbers without anyone running a manual refresh.
  • Stable Reports: Your columns and tab names stay consistent from run to run, so charts don't break when new data arrives.
  • Deeper Shopify Data: Go beyond orders with line items, refunds, discounts, inventory, payouts, custom metafields and Shopify Analytics tabs.
  • One Source of Truth: Marketing, finance and operations all look at the same dashboard, built from the same data.

FAQ

Does Looker Studio have a native Shopify connector? Google doesn't provide a built-in Shopify connector for Looker Studio. The most common approach is to sync Shopify into Google Sheets or BigQuery, which Looker Studio supports natively, and build your report on top.

Should I use Google Sheets or BigQuery? Google Sheets is the easiest place to start and works well for smaller datasets. BigQuery is better for large stores, long order histories, multiple stores, or if you want to use SQL. See Viewing Your Data in Looker Studio for a side-by-side comparison.

How often does my Shopify dashboard update? As often as your SyncRange export runs. That's daily on the Free plan, hourly on Starter and Pro, every 30 minutes on Scale and every 15 minutes on Growth.

Can SyncRange change anything in my Shopify store? No. SyncRange requests read-only access, so it can export your data but can't modify your store, products, orders or customers.

Can I report on more than orders? Yes. Along with Orders and Line Items, you can export Products, Customers, Inventory, Collections, Discounts, Refund Analysis, Gift Cards, Shopify Payments payouts and Shopify Analytics data. The Shopify data reference lists every tab and column.

How much does it cost? Looker Studio is free for creators and viewers. SyncRange has a free plan, and paid plans start from $19/month for more scheduled exports and faster syncing. See pricing.
